Our neighbors at SPY Optics raised quite the controversy when they erected a billboard over downtown Encinitas that read “Happy To Sit On Your Face,” and members of the seaside community raised such a ruckus that it was pulled down a short time later. The whole fiasco didn’t affect the all-new Happy Lens’ performance, and SPY has been selling out the newest lens in a number of frames. As you can see here, if you make the mistake of ordering a size up, rather then a size down, you will run the chance of getting pantsed in the whoop section. 

What It Is

Summer is right around the corner, and scoring some light colored gear for those hot and sunny days at the track is a must. So when we took delivery of a new set of 2013 ONE Industries Defcon TXT1 gear, we were stoked to see it in the mostly all-white color option that ONE currently has available. With temperatures on the rise over the last few weeks here in Southern California, we had the perfect opportunity to test it out.

The knee of the Defcon pant provides plenty of room for bulky braces and protecteive equipment. This photo actually shows the pant without a brace underneath.

Hits

- If style and look is important, the Defcon TXT1 racewear has you covered. The gear attracts compliments from just about anyone.

- The Defcon pant is well constructed. It has minimal TPR panels and logos, almost all designs are sublimated into the material, the knees have four-way stretch panels and allow plenty of room for bulky braces and protective equipment.

- The leather on the inside of the knee is less bulky, but still provides enough thickness to ensure your knee braces won’t bust through while squeezing the bike with your legs.

The waist closure system was simple but durable, and did a great job of what it was made for, which is keeping your pants around your waist and not at your knees.

- Comfort is a must whether you’re on the bike or off, and this is some of the most comfortable we’ve tested.

- The Defcon jersey is especially favorable to riders who prefer a more tailored and athletic fit. The cuffless sleeves reduce bunching and help prevent the urge to roll them up.

- The Gamma helmet is incredibly light!

The form fitting sleeves on the Defcon jersey can be revered as a good or bad thing, depending on personal taste. As tested by us, the tailored, athletic fit is preferred.

 Misses

- Like all white gear, it will garner stains after the first ride.

- We couldn’t get the visor of the Gamma helmet to sit straight! Despite our best efforts it remained crooked and squidish. We would also like it to be set back further on the helmet.

- The pants run slightly roomier than normal sizing. If you’re in between sizes, definitely choose the smaller one. We originally ordered a size up, and immediately felt like a candidate for a Slim-Fast commercial. However, after we got the proper sizing, the fit was amazing.

What We Think

Overall, we love the gear. The fit will be determined by your own personal preference, but if you prefer the tailored feel over loose fitting gear, then we recommend the ONE Industries Defcon line-up, just be weary of sizing. The quality and durability is exceptional, which is light-years away from where ONE first started just a few years ago. If you want gear that stands out, but without looking like a crayon box just threw up on you, then you should order a set of the TXT1 racewear today.

After a full season of racing across Southern California, we are ready to put the 2013 Muscle Milk TWMX Race Series Spring Cup to an end. Four prior rounds of action at Perris, Cahuilla Creek, Glen Helen, and Milestone have brought out record numbers and acclaim for the all-new two track format, which will continue on through every future stop. The end of the Spring Cup will surely be one to remember, as we will give away a number of prizes and awards to our series members. The only way to do it justice is with two full days of racing at Hesperia’s Competitive Edge.

With so many championship battles coming down to the wire, we expect plenty of action on the tracks. Running on the Amateur track (hillside track) will be all sizes of Beginngers, from 50s to 450s. The rest of the competition will hit the Expert track and it’s massive leaps, high speed sections, and rolling elevation. This new format has been met with praise as it allows for motos to be run simultaneously and drastically shortens the day at the track. At the prior rounds of the Muscle Milk TWMX Race Series Spring Cup, for example, all racing had concluded by 3PM. We will award the victors of each championship handsomely at the conclusion of Sunday’s racing action, as numerous series sponsors have unloaded stacks of merchandise to be given away.

Champions will not be the only ones walking away with goods. One race series member, chosen at random, will be presented with a Yamaha PW50, EF2000iS generator, and branded EZ-Up, all thanks to Yamaha, the official motorcycle manufacturer of the Muscle Milk TWMX Race Series. Every entrant at stops of the Spring Cup have been given tickets to enter the drawing, and they must be present on Sunday to win. You’d better be there.

A number of sponsors and vendors will be out in force. Thousand Oaks Yamaha will be on hand to support riders with raceday bike prep, ODI will have their grips and CFT bars on display, Asterisk will have the full line of knee protection for all to see, and etnies will showcase their 2013 Spring line.

Both days of racing begin with gates opening at 6:30AM, registration taking place from 6:30 to 8AM, and practice kicking off at 8AM. First moto racing will begin soon after the final practice session is complete.

Ready to race? Good. You have two entry methods that will get you in, but we are rather partial to one. Traditional raceday sign-up is available, with cash and now credit card as payment, but you can enter early through our online registration area and use the PayPal option. Payment via PayPal and increased odds at a better first moto gate selection make signing up on the web a viable option, along with this week’s online entry prize, courtesy of Muscle Milk. Early entry closes Thursday, May 16th, at 11:55PM.

(May 14, 2013) – It was announced today that Thunder Valley Motocross Park, host of the second round of the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, has signed Rockwell Watches to serve as title sponsor of the Thunder Valley National scheduled for Saturday, May 25, in Lakewood.

Thunder Valley Motocross Park has hosted a round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship since the 2005 season. The 2013 campaign signifies the earliest the track has ever been in the championship, moving up one round from last season. In its eight seasons as a stop in the world’s most prestigious motocross series, Thunder Valley has been the sight of many memorable moments, including the first ever motocross national to be run at night during the 2008 season.

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, features the world’s fastest professional motocross racers competing aboard state-of-the-art motorcycles on the roughest, toughest racetracks on the planet. The championship includes stops at the premier motocross racing facilities in America, with events in Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. Professional competition is divided into two classes: the 250 Class for 150-250cc machines, and the 450 Class for 251-450cc machines. Three of the Series championship rounds will feature the rapidly-growing Women’s Pro Motocross Triple Crown (“WMX Class”).

Thunder Valley Motocross Park

When Thunder Valley Motocross Park was founded in June of 1999, promoter David Clabaugh couldn’t have known how appropriate his track’s name would become. He knew that nearby was an NHRA drag-racing track with the same name (Thunder Valley), but within a few short years of the founding of the motocross track, four-strokes took over motocross completely, leaving a sound of thunder every time the gate dropped at the facility. Thunder Valley, just a few miles below downtown Denver, hosted its first AMA Pro Motocross National in July of 2005. In the first few years of racing at the facility, riders and mechanics were met with a combination of altitude and summertime heat that not only made it physically difficult on them but caused the fuel in the motorcycles to literally boil. The solution was a revolutionary one: in 2008, Thunder Valley hosted the first AMA Pro Motocross National ever held at night, under a battery of lights that illuminated the valley. With a live internet and TV audience watching, the race was a smash hit.

This past week it was announced that the VMS/Yamaha team will no longer be operating for 2013. After completing the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross series, the team’s owner decided to close up shop and sit out the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship. The decision has left team riders Travis Baker and Kyle Regal out of a ride and the team personnel out of work. There is still a chance that the team will return next year, but for now, they are officially done for 2013. During the Salt Lake City round the the Supercross series, Scott Dimick gave us an inside look into Baker’s YZ250F.

For Supercross, the VMS/Yamaha team received helped from Factory Yamaha. “For the first six rounds, we were using a motor that was supplied from Yamaha,” Scott Dimick said. “But now we are doing the motor completely in-house and it’s just about identical to what we had from Yamaha. Travis likes his motors to hit really hard and have a lot of torque. We’re trying to get the most power that we can out of these bikes, so we push them pretty hard.”

Getting a lot of power out of a 250cc four-stroke takes work, but the VMS team managed to do exactly that. “We use a lot of the GYTR components from Yamaha—basically the entire clutch,” Dimick said. “Pro Circuit has been helping us out a lot with the piston and exhaust. As far as the head, Alan from CT Racing do the heads and we have been able to get a lot of power out of the head.”

The YZ250F is the only 250cc four-stroke to be carbureted, which adds another dimension to performance. But for Supercross, not too much tweaking is needed. “We did a lot of work with jetting,” Dimick said. “We did some stuff on the dyno to get the power right, then went out to the track to make sure what we found on the dyno worked.”

Baker runs A-Kit suspension from Pro Circuit. “We’ve had the same settings since Anahiem I,” Dimick said. “Travis isn’t super picky with his suspension. We just get it serviced and keep it fresh for him. The SFF stuff is really good and it’s a little bit lighter than the regular suspension that has two springs. I think we have a really good setup with the Pro Circuit suspension and linkage. It’s a good package.”

Brembo supplies an over-sized front brake for added braking power.

Pro Circuit helps with an exhaust system and internal engine parts as well. The system helps to boost the power all throughout the powerband, giving Baker the added power that he needs.

New bike season comes earlier and earlier each year. We are not even halfway through this calendar and Honda has already released their 2014 CRF race-bike line, which does indeed include the new CRF250R we saw a glimpse of in Japan. They did not stop there, as they went through their CRF450R and revamped area of the recently redesigned bike.

2014 Honda CRF250R

When they released the redesigned and widely acclaimed Honda CRF450R in 2013, many called for the same treatment to come for the small-bore thumper. The changes have come in 2014 and Honda’s 250F features an all-new chassis, revised motor, transmission, and bold look.

The base of the 2014 Honda CRF250R is its chassis. It is a new design that borrows from the 450′s design, as it lowers the center of gravity and gives the bike a more agile feel. The subframe and airbox have also be reconfigured and have been made lighter. The biggest visual change is undoubtedly the revival of dual exhausts on the CRF250R, which was the first bike in Honda’s motocross line to have this feature in the last decade. The concept is used to better balance the bike’s weight in such a tall area and cuts down on sound output. Honda’s Unicam motor was also freshened up and includes a new piston and cylinder head that creates a higher compression ratio, which is fueled by new PGM-FI fuel injection. Matched to the engine is a stronger five-speed transmission. Finally, the bike looks wholly different with new shrouds and side panels covering the redone radiators and the dual exhaust. Completely filled with fluids, the 2014 Honda CRF250R weighs in at 231 pounds.

2014 Honda CRF450R

Rather than resting on their laurels with the 2013 Honda CRF450R, Honda went through the insanely popular machine and improved certain areas for the new model year. It also has new PGM-Fi fuel injection settings and muffler inserts to improve the flow of exhaust through the dual pipes. New springs have been dropped inside the clutch to improve pull and overall feel at the lever. Finally, there are revised settings to the Kayaba PSF fork internals for improved dampening response.
